Wall·E soundtrack by Thomas Newman

I didn't really know what to expect when this album started off with Michael Crawford singing 'Put On Your Sunday Clothes' until it reverbed and echoed at the end into Thomas Newman's orchestral pieces which were rich and exciting. Film director Andrew Stanton wanted to combine Newman with tracks from the film 'Hello Dolly!' so there also 'La Vie En Rose' sung by Louis Armstrong and 'It Only Takes A Moment', sung again by Michael Crawford. There is also a song by Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman called 'Down To Earth'. I can only assume it makes sense in the context of the film.
As to what this has to do the film, you'll probably know before me. Wall·E, who looks like a shorter version of the robot from 'Short Circuit' is the last machine operating on a deserted planet Earth until a super-sleek search robot called Eve arrives to check if the world can be inhabited again. With Eve realising that Wall·E has come across the solution to this problem, she races back to inform the humans.
The sleeve for this CD is purely foldout cardboard which I suspect is to symbolise the wasteland the Earth has turned into. In contrast, the twenty page booklet is full of photos, credits and lyrics to the Peter Gabriel song.
The thirty-eight tracks on this CD are the music accompaniment to this film. Newman has an interesting knack for getting the best out of his orchestra, allowing some instruments to shine along the way. Although I would hesitate to say there are any melodies you could hum to afterwards, it does make a pleasant hour's listening and would be on your list to get if you enjoy the film.
